New Jersey Independent South Asian Cine Fest (NJISACF)

I wanted to let you know what a wonderful reception your film "Children We Sacrifice" received at the South Asian Cine Fest today. It was one of the two films Manavi showed for the 'Women at Center' segment it organized. People were overwhelmed with emotions and there were many questions after the showing.

Thank you so much for making such an important and insightful film. The festival went really well. I believe you would have enjoyed it a lot. Shamita Das Dasgupta, Ph.D.,

"The Children We Sacrifice is a film filled with images that shake you, make you furious, bring a lump to your throat and make you want to reach out... [It] jolts us out of our complacency...a film that has to be viewed by both children and adults to know how to take preventive steps, read the warning signs, and help survivors snap out of "a frozen state of victimhood".

"A classic piece of socio-documentary about the issues that plague our communities ... Grace's intent is not only to break the silence on the subject but also to reconstruct the layers of silence within the family and society. The reconstruction is done artistically and symbolically [with] art, music and poetry creatively and deliberately blended throughout the video."

"The video is devoid of sensationalism or a patronizing attitude...  Like the patchwork quilt which appears as a striking motif in one of the scenes, Grace masterfully weaves together the stories and experiences of these women with a fractured past. There's a warmth, an understanding, a commendable accent on healing and rehabilitation, rather than anger and retribution."

"In her hour-long compelling documentary, Grace Poore trains her lens on former victims of incest of South Asian descent, as she captures their fears and frustrations and the pain that somehow never seems to have left them... The tales are heart-wrenching. In turn, they make you sad and angry. They make you want to scream out for justice."

"I was very moved and impressed with your film. I felt you achieved a terrific balance. It was sensitive, compassionate and yet such a strong "no" to abuse."

"Malaysian-Indian  Poore's  61-minute  video  documentary,  The  Children
We Sacrifice
, has stirred passions and tempers, raised hackles and shocked viewers wherever it has been screened. For the film breaks the silence on child abuse and sets out to demolish the myths that surround the despicable act -- the how and who of it."

"Whenever women activist Grace Poore screens her documentary to women, whether here in Malaysia or overseas, at least one person will go up to her and say she had experienced incest as a child. This is both bad and good news. Bad, because it confirms the grim reality that incest has been occurring behind the closed doors of many homes. But such open acknowledgment can also be an empowering step toward destigmatising a long-time taboo."

Cindy Tham, The Sun

"Despite the grimness of its subject, the film is not hard to watch. In fact, it is marked by an unexpected gentleness...and despite the inescapable fact that the majority of sexual abusers is male, the video does not demonize men."

Ammu Joseph, The Hindu
